THERMAL BOND AC CRACK REPAIRS
Thermal bond AC crack repairs are full depth homogeneous repairs of thermal cracks in asphalt concrete pavements and shall consist of heating, scarifying, applying rejuvenation agents, filling and compacting cracks and surrounding repair areas in asphalt concrete pavement. Rejuvenation softening agent shall be Witco brand Reclamite or approved equal. Rejuvenation bonding agent shall be Witco brand CRF or approved equal. New asphalt shall be as directed by the Engineer.
Notice: The following thermal bond AC crack repair process has been developed by Thermal Power Corporation using their equipment, products and methods which have patents or patents pending. Pavement Savers, Inc. is the exclusive licensee of this equipment and methods. All bidders on this process must be approved by the licensee. All costs related to obtaining and maintaining such approval shall be included in the bid price. For further information contact Pavement Savers, Inc. of Cocoa, Florida.
The equipment shall include a heating panel that provides radiant heat, no flame, uniformly distributed its entire surface, adjustable from 20,000 to 40,000 BTUs per square foot. Propane gas shall be the only combustible fuel used and within 10 feet of the heating panel.
The heating panel shall be controlled by an automatic timer consisting of a main cycle, adjustable for both ON and OFF periods, and repeat cycle, adjustable for the overall time of repeat cycling action. The main cycle shall automatically start the repeat cycles at the end of its maximum adjusted time span. The repeat cycle shall be activated by itself. All of these adjustments shall be easily made without any tools required. Complete manual override and general manual operation shall be incorporated in the system.
The heated area of the panel shall be:
1. 6 feet by 6 feet minimum area.
2. Divided into 4 quadrants sized between _ and 1/3 of the panel dimensions on each respective side.
3. With each quadrant operable independently of the others and in all possible combinations with each other.
The heat panel shall have instant kill switches located on each side of the units that can be activated by a rapid strike of a button. All other controls of panel activity other than the kill switches shall be at one location and include another instant kill switch at that location.
All electrical and fuel devices shall comply with all applicable state, federal and local regulations at all times.
The equipment shall include a thermostatically controlled heated storage compartment with an automated delivery system to place AC into the repair.
The rejuvenation bonding agent distribution system shall have a volume meter on the flow line to the spray device with incremental gauge units of .1 gallon maximum.
All deleterious or foreign material shall be cleared from the repair area before beginning the repair.
The Contractor shall inspect the site and if vegetation is found in the repair area it shall be sprayed with Monstanto brand Roundup, or approved equal, more than one week prior to the repair work. Any application of weed killer followed by precipitation within 8 hours shall be repeated.
Cracks shall be thoroughly cleaned out of all material which will not melt and flow fully to the bottom of the crack during the heat cycle required to make the repair.
Prior to heating rejuvenation, softening agent shall be applied to the inner surfaces of the crack at the rate of .01 gallons per lineal foot of crack.
Heating and Scarifying
The panel shall be positioned such that the heated surface of the panel extends a minimum of 3 inches beyond the area of repair. The area of repair shall include the crack and an area approximately 2 feet wide centered on the approximate average alignment of the crack.
Pavement shall not be heated to temperatures which are harmful to the surface asphalt. An appropriate adjustment of the timer shall be made to eliminate any tendency for such effects. Once adjusted for a particular pavement area, controls shall remain unchanged unless a change of pavement surface reveals a changed condition, or it is demonstrated to the Engineer that a modified cycle is appropriate.
The repair shall be scarified over the entire heated area to the required depth of _ inch by viscous shearing without scratching or scraping the underlying hard asphalt. The outside edges shall be parallel and straight and be located at least one inch inside the perimeter of the heat panel as it was positioned for heating.
Rejuvenation bonding agent shall be applied to the pavement over all surfaces within the scarified area at the rate of .01 gallons per square foot.
All scarification motions shall be made from the outside edge of the area directly toward the crack. The material generated by the scarification action shall be worked towards the crack and shall be allowed to fill the crack. Scarified material shall be mounded over the center of the crack.
Compaction Within the Crack
The mound of material shall immediately be compacted into the crack as soon as the mound is formed. A high impact pneumatic tamper shall be used with a Thermal Power Compaction head or one approved equal in which the narrow dimension shall be no less than 25% smaller than nor 10% larger that the average width of the crack and three inches in the long dimension. The long Dimension shall be applied along the line of the crack.
After maximum compaction effort has been achieved, and depending on the thickness of the existing pavement thickness, another mound may be created with scarified material and the compaction effort repeated. The repeat compaction cycle shall be performed once for every additional 1.5 inches over 3 inches of existing pavement thickness. The cycle of mounding and compacting shall continue uninterrupted until the crack is _ inch below the surrounding scarified pavement surface.
Processing the Repair Surface
The heat panel shall be lowered into its original heating position. The surface shall be heated to the most effective working temperature with repeat cycles such that the pavement does not smoke or catch fire.
A wear course of fresh AC shall be applied to the repair from the automated delivery system. Edges shall be carefully luted to provide a smooth flush joint. The overall patch shall be luted to a smooth flat surface such that after compaction the final repair surface is flat and no more that _ inch above the original pavement grade.
The repair shall be rolled with a vibratory roller with a minimum centrifugal force of 2250 pounds. The site of the repair shall be left clean.
An additional .03 gallons per square yard of rejuvenation bonding agent shall then be applied to the entire repair area. A thin layer of sand shall be applied to the full repair area if exposure to traffic is to occur within one hour.
Cones shall be adjusted to delineate traffic around the repair and shall be left in place until the asphalt will not ravel from traffic.
Thermal bond AC crack repairs will be measured and paid for by the lineal foot. Such price shall include full compensation for furnishing all materials, labor, and equipment and incidentals required to construct the thermal bond AC crack repairs in accordance with the Plans and Specifications.
